Inspiring a Love of Reading: Local Partnership Delivers Book Swap Initiative Across Birstall and Batley
BBEST Community Hub CIC, in partnership with Let June, is proud to celebrate the successful delivery of a reading initiative supporting children and young people across the Birstall and Batley area as part of the National Year of Reading 2026.
Working through BBEST’s established network of local schools, the project provided carefully curated book boxes designed to reach pupils who may otherwise have limited access to reading materials at home. Each participating school received a ready-made resource containing a selection of high-quality books, alongside a practical teacher guide to support the delivery of a sustainable book swap scheme within their setting.
The books were thoughtfully selected from a curated reading list suitable for Key Stage 2 pupils, ensuring a broad range of engaging, age-appropriate titles that promote enjoyment, curiosity and confidence in reading. The book swap model enables children to regularly exchange books, helping to maximise access while fostering a sense of ownership and excitement around reading.
Feedback from schools has been overwhelmingly positive, with teachers highlighting increased engagement, enthusiasm, and a renewed interest in reading among pupils. The structured approach has also supported schools to embed reading for pleasure in a simple, accessible and sustainable way.
This project demonstrates the power of strong local partnerships and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for young people. By combining BBEST’s close relationships with schools and Let June’s generous support, the initiative has successfully removed barriers to reading and created meaningful opportunities for children across the community.
Nichola Winn from BBEST Community Hub CIC said:
"We wanted to create something that was not only impactful, but sustainable for schools. By providing curated book boxes and a simple book swap model, we’ve been able to support more children to access and enjoy books in a way that fits easily into school life. We are incredibly grateful to Let June for making this possible."

As the National Year of Reading continues to inspire communities across the country, this initiative stands as a strong example of how collaboration can create lasting, practical impact.

Travel Incentive
BBEST Community Hub CIC works with Star Coaches of Batley Ltd to subsidise Educational Trips for 20 Local Schools
BBEST Community Hub CIC is delighted to announce a new partnership with Star Coaches of Batley Ltd, which will provide subsidised transport for educational trips benefiting 20 local primary and secondary schools throughout 2026.
Through this collaboration, BBEST Community Hub CIC has committed £10,000 to support travel costs, helping to remove financial barriers that often prevent young people from accessing valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom.
Educational visits play a vital role in enriching the curriculum, broadening horizons and inspiring ambition. However, rising transport costs can make trips increasingly difficult for schools and families to afford. This partnership directly addresses that challenge by ensuring more pupils can take part in cultural, historical, and aspirational experiences.
Lisa Varley, on behalf of BBEST Community Hub CIC, said:
“We know how important educational trips are in shaping confidence, curiosity and aspiration in young people. By working together with Star Coaches of Batley Ltd, we are ensuring that more children across our network of schools can access experiences that enrich their learning and create lasting memories.”
Star Coaches of Batley Ltd added:
“We are proud to partner with BBEST Community Hub CIC on this important initiative. Supporting local schools and communities is at the heart of what we do, and we are pleased to play our part in enabling these valuable opportunities for young people.”
The funding will be available to 20 BBEST member schools across 2026, supporting trips throughout the academic year.
